Attention Washington State Beta Alpha Psi Chapters!

Are you in need of chapter service hours, ideas for the Best Practices competition, and an engaging service project for your group? If so, then consider applying to host a Financial Literacy Symposium with the Washington Society of CPAs!

If selected, your chapter’s members would host up to 100 high school students for a 4-hour Symposium focused on Financial Education and Accounting Careers topics, with financial support from the WSCPA for venue and food costs.

At the symposium, high school students will learn financial education principles through WSECU’s Financial Reality Fair model, a hands-on learning experience where students are given a life scenario and career, then visit different booths to pay for basics such as housing, utilities, clothing and food while avoiding temptations to overspend. Your chapter members would be leading the reality fair booths and coordinating the event logistics.

The event would be held at a suitable venue on your campus in the spring of 2018. The exact date will depend on the availability of the campus venue, your BAP schedule, and local high school and college breaks.

Why Should My Chapter Participate?

Hosting a Financial Literacy Symposium has many benefits:

  • Earn community service hours
  • Provide leadership development experience to your members
  • Increase your chapter identity and spirit
  • Promote your campus and accounting or business program to local high schools
  • Develop material for your Financial Education/Service Best Practices competition proposal

How Will the WSCPA Help?

The WSCPA will be responsible for:

  • Helping to create materials and a plan for marketing the event to local high schools
  • Covering the expenses for venue rental and food costs
  • Conducting training sessions for your members and volunteers
  • Coordinating all logistics with your chapter's liaison for this event

Sounds Good. How Can My BAP Chapter Host a Financial Literacy Symposium?

Prepare and submit a proposal for hosting an Accounting Careers Symposium to the Washington Society of CPAs by November 17, 2017. Since there are more schools interested in hosting a Symposium than there are opportunities available to host, not all schools that submit proposals will be chosen for participation. We will choose two chapters to host. The proposal should address the following:

  • Why does your chapter want to host a Financial Literacy Symposium?
  • A prospective venue for the event and that venue's rental cost.
  • A budget for lunch for 100 students and 20 volunteers, in accordance with the rules of your selected venue.
  • The name of the member who will serve as your chapter's liaison for this project.
  • Estimated number of volunteers your chapter could provide.
  • Connections that your roster of officers may have with high schools in the area, and ideas for how you would help market the symposium to the surrounding high schools.

Submit your proposal by emailing it to the WSCPA's Academic Relations Coordinator, Monette Anderson, before November 17, 2017.
